Mayrhofen is one of the better known Austrian ski resorts, because of the quality of the slopes, the charm of the town and how long it’s been a ski area. Skiing takes place over 135 km of terrain spanning three separate mountains, all with very different personalities, but are all included on the Zillertal Superskipass. The largest and closest to town is the Penken area — ascend to the peak on the Penkenbahn (brand new in 2015/16!) right from the town center, the most advanced cable car in the world! And don’t miss your chance to take on the “Harikari” – Austria’s steepest piste with a 78 degree incline!
The Hintertux glacier — “World’s Best Glacier Ski Resort” — has guaranteed skiing year-round and some of the steepest glacier skiing found in Austria, is a convenient ride on the Greenline bus right from the village in Mayrhofen. The third, smallest and easiest mountain resort in the Mayrhofen region is the Ahorn, which is on the opposite side of town than Penken.
Maybe the biggest attraction to a holiday in Mayrhofen is the memories you will have from enjoying this village and it’s inhabitants. Mayrhofen has retained most of its early Tyrolean mountain-resort charm with chalet-style building and classy hotels and restaurants. The Mayrhofen nightlife is also very lively with many discos that have dance music ranging from Tyrolean-style polkas to raves – and the “bier keller” where you can enjoy a few après-ski steins of Austrian beer.
